Gates brings more than a half–century of law enforcement expertise, including 43 years of distinguished police service, almost 15 years of which he served as chief of the Los Angeles Police Department. A s a recognized pioneer in law enforcement, Gates has been an advisor to government leaders in matters of public safety and was chairman of the Major Cities Chiefs Association from 1988 to 1992. He is also a recognized authority on terrorism, control of civil disorders and riots, and development of air support for ground units. He holds a bachelors and masters degree from the University of Southern California.
